Dorogawa Onsen is a high-altitude hot spring village located at approximately 820m above sea level in Tenkawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture. Situated along the Yamauchi River flowing from the Omine mountain range, its cool climate has earned it the nickname "Karuizawa of Kansai." The most striking feature is the nostalgic streetscape, lined with traditional wooden inns and guesthouses that make you feel as if you have stepped back into the Showa era. The town boasts about 20 accommodation facilities, each preserving a deep sense of Japanese history. Furthermore, the area is celebrated as a "Village of Water," home to the Dorogawa Spring Group, which has been selected as one of Japan's "100 Best Waters" by the Ministry of the Environment.
The history of this region is deeply intertwined with Mt. Omine, a sacred site for Shugendo (ascetic way of mountain worship). Historically, it developed as a post town for pilgrims and practitioners heading toward the sacred mountains. Legend says the area was settled by the descendants of a follower of En no Gyoja, a legendary mountain ascetic. In the past, it served as a place for practitioners to conclude their ascetic training with ritual meals. Today, the spirit of Shugendo remains alive through events like the "Gyojamatsuri" (Ascetic Festival) held every August 2nd and 3rd, celebrating the legends of the mountain practitioners.
