Doichachu, located in Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, is a precious area that preserves the historical landscapes of Japan. In 2012, it was officially designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. More than just a tourist spot, Doichachu serves as a living museum where visitors can feel the spirit of Japanese culture and the lifestyle of the Tosa Clan.
This region has a deep history as a residential area for samurai under the rule of the Tosa Clan. A distinctive feature is the use of Uname oak and Doyo bamboo hedges around the residences—designs that were once exclusive to the samurai class in Tosa, symbolizing the strict social hierarchy and cultural identity of the era. To preserve this heritage, the community works collectively on landscape preservation and tourism. The area is also recognized as part of the 'Nihon Fukei Kaido' (Japanese Scenic Route) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, highlighting its unique blend of nature and culture.
There are many historical structures to discover in Doichachu. A primary highlight is the birthplace of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the Mitsubishi Group. The garden features a unique stone arrangement designed to resemble the shape of the Japanese archipelago, offering a beautiful fusion of nature and art. Other significant sites include Joteiji Temple, the family temple of the Aki clan who once ruled this land, providing a profound sense of historical weight with every step you take.
Doichachu reveals different faces depending on the season. Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather, making it an ideal time for walking tours.
