The Osamu Dazai Memorial Museum, known as 'Shayokan,' is located in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture. This facility preserves the birthplace of the legendary literary figure Osamu Dazai. The mansion was constructed in 1907 by Dazai's father, Genemon Tsushima. A defining feature of this magnificent architecture is the extensive use of Aomori Hiba (Japanese cypress), which extends even to the rice storehouses. This creates a sense of luxury and strength characteristic of the wealthy merchants of the Tohoku region. Today, it is recognized as a National Important Cultural Property and serves as a premier example of modern Japanese-style residential architecture.
The main building was constructed by the wealthy landowner Genemon Tsushima with a massive investment for its time. The estate is vast, featuring 11 rooms and 278 tsubo on the first floor, 8 rooms and 116 tsubo on the second floor, and an expansive total area of approximately 680 tsubo including outbuildings and gardens. Osamu Dazai himself reflected upon the sheer scale of this residence in his work 'The Annihilation of the Self.' After the war, the estate served as a traditional inn called 'Shayokan' before transitioning into a memorial museum in 1996 to preserve and celebrate the literary legacy of Dazai.
The greatest attraction is the exhibition held within the 'Bunko-kura' (storehouse). As you walk through the wooden corridors into the storehouse, you will find approximately 300 precious items, including the capes and traditional clothing worn by Osamu Dazai, his writing tools, and rare first editions or letters. The handwritten manuscripts of 'Hashiranu Meiiba' are particularly significant. Beyond the artifacts, the architecture itself is a masterpiece. Visitors can experience the weight of history through the grand Japanese-style rooms, the Western-style rooms on the second floor, and the serene gardens, all of which showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of the Meiji era.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM) year-round. The experience is beautiful in any season, but we highly recommend visiting during the hours when sunlight filters through the windows. The natural light highlights the texture of the Aomori Hiba wood and enhances the tranquil atmosphere of the traditional rooms. It is a perfect time to immerse yourself in the literary atmosphere of the past.

The Goshogawara area offers more than just literature; you can also explore local culture, such as the Tsugaru Shamisen music. The museum is easily accessible on foot from Kanagi Station on the Tsugaru Railway, allowing you to enjoy a culturally rich journey through the history of Aomori.
As this is a historic wooden structure, visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the building. Please dress appropriately for the season.
