Daisho-in is a historic temple located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The temple grounds are characterized by a beautiful landscape that exists in perfect harmony with the surrounding lush nature. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil atmosphere where the gentle sounds of birdsong and the sight of water lilies and lotus leaves in the temple pond create a sense of profound peace. The temple complex houses several structures of significant historical value. The main hall (Hondo) is a Ho-jo style Buddhist hall that was rebuilt following a historical fire. Other structures, such as the bell tower (Shoro-mon), the kitchen (Kuri), and the study (Shoin), preserve traditional architectural styles from specific historical eras. The grounds also serve as a significant historical site, containing the graves of the Mori lords of the Hagi Domain (including the 1st Lord Shigeharu, 2nd Lord Tsunahiro, 4th Lord Yoshihiro, 6th Lord Munehiro, 8th Lord Haruchika, 10th Lord Narihira, and 12th Lord Narihiro). Additionally, the temple holds precious cultural assets, such as the wooden statue of Akado-ko, believed to date back to the Nanboku-cho period.
As you wander through the grounds, you will encounter various historic buildings. The main hall, bell tower, kitchen, and study each showcase unique architectural styles that allow visitors to observe traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The area surrounding the beautiful pond offers a changing scenery of seasonal plants and aquatic vegetation. Daisho-in offers a different face to every season. The flora around the pond, such as the Kouhone (marsh marigold) and other seasonal blossoms, changes beautifully depending on when you visit. Please note that opening hours vary by season: from April to November, the temple is open until 17:00, and from December to March, it closes at 16:30. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the sunlight filtering through the greenery and reflecting off the pond.
Visitors can immerse themselves in a quiet environment to connect with nature and history. You can observe small fish like medaka swimming in the pond and listen to the birdsong while surrounded by rich greenery.
