Daigo Sakura is a massive Edo Higanzakura (mountain cherry) tree located in Bessho, Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. Designated as a natural monument of Okayama and selected as one of the "New Japan's Top 100 Famous Trees," it possesses an overwhelming presence. Standing alone on a high plateau without any surrounding obstructions, the tree reaches approximately 18 meters in height and has a trunk circumference of about 9.2 meters, showcasing a truly powerful and monumental scale.
The name "Daigo Sakura" is rooted in a historical legend. It is said that in 1332, during his journey to exile on Oki Island, Emperor Go-Daigo saw and praised this magnificent tree. This connection gave the tree its name, and it is also affectionately known by locals as "Oozakura" (Great Cherry Blossom). Furthermore, the site gained cultural fame as a filming location for the 2003 NHK Taiga Drama "Musashi," marking it as a significant cultural landmark in Japan.
The most striking feature is its solitary, noble stance. Seeing a single giant tree spreading its branches toward the heavens amidst a peaceful mountain village landscape leaves a deep impression on all who visit. During the peak bloom in spring, the tree radiates a sense of vitality. Additionally, during certain periods, the tree is illuminated at night, creating a mystical and ethereal atmosphere that differs greatly from its daytime appearance.
The best time to visit is typically from late March to early April. The beauty of the tree at full bloom is truly exceptional. During the day, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the blossoms under the bright sunlight, while at night, the light-up events offer a magical experience. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, but the peak of spring brings a lively and energetic atmosphere to the area.
Visitors can enjoy walking through the surrounding nature. A popular way to experience the site is the "Daigo Sakura Hiking" route. By walking about 3 km (approximately 40 minutes) from the vicinity of the old Bessho Elementary School, you can feel the fresh spring air and enjoy the gradual approach to the magnificent tree.
Daigo Sakura is located in the Kitafusa/Ochiai area of Maniwa City, a region characterized by peaceful mountain scenery and abundant nature. Visitors can also enjoy local eateries in the Ochiai area to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Maniwa.
