Lake Chuzenji is a high-altitude lake located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The lake has a circumference of approximately 25 kilometers and reaches a maximum depth of 163 meters. Nested at the foot of Mt. Nantai, the shoreline offers a constantly changing natural landscape throughout the seasons. Historically, its mild and pleasant climate made it a popular summer retreat for international visitors. Today, it remains one of the most iconic landmarks in the Nikko area for nature lovers.
The area surrounding Lake Chuzenji is dotted with sites of significant historical importance. On the northern shore, at the foot of Mt. Nantai, lies the Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chugusha. This shrine serves as a middle point between the Okumiya of Futarasan Shrine at the summit of Mt. Nantai and the Honsha of Futarasan Shrine in Nikko city. The landscape is also characterized by facilities that harmonize beautifully with the natural environment, preserving a sense of historical elegance.
The greatest charm of Lake Chuzenji is the breathtaking harmony between the surrounding mountains and the pristine lake water. The scenery is particularly captivating during early summer when the azaleas are in full bloom, and in autumn when the foliage turns brilliant colors. Many scenic spots, including waterfalls and viewpoints, are easily accessible by car or bus.
Because Lake Chuzenji is located at a high altitude, it is essential to prepare for the weather. Please bring warm clothing or layers, especially for autumn, winter, or if the weather changes unexpectedly. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended for walking along the lakeside. Regarding payments, while many places accept credit cards and IC cards, it is wise to carry cash for smaller local expenses. English-language signage and support levels vary by facility, so checking in advance is recommended.
