Chukoki Bonmoe is a significant Buddhist ritual held at Toshodai-ji Temple in Nara to commemorate the legacy of Bodhisattva Kakusei, a figure who led the movement to restore Buddhist precepts during the Kamakura period. According to the 2026 schedule, the distribution of 'Uchiwa-maki participation tickets' begins at 9:00 AM, the main Buddhist service starts at 1:00 PM, and the Uchiwa-maki ceremony is scheduled for 3:00 PM. Visitors can enjoy the striking contrast between the solemnity of the ritual and the dynamic movement of the subsequent ceremonies. The event takes place during the pleasant, mild weather of May.
Visitors can do more than just observe; by securing a distributed ticket, you can participate in the 'Uchiwa-maki' process.
