Chuguji is a temple of the Shingon Shuzai sect located in Ikaruga, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture. Historically operated as a nunnery, it is recognized as one of the Yamato Sanmon-zeki temples. Its most significant feature is the enshrining of the Bodhisattva Pensive Statue (a National Treasure), which is celebrated as one of the world's three great smiling statues. The temple also houses precious cultural assets, such as the Tenjuko Mandala Embroidered Hanging (National Treasure).
The temple is believed to have been built on the site of a former palace by Prince Shotoku for his mother, Empress Anahobe no Yamatoime, and has long been associated with the Ikaruga Gosho. Throughout its history, it has preserved numerous cultural treasures. Among its collection is the 'Paper Made Monju Bosatsu Standing Statue,' a rare Buddhist statue made of paper from the Kamakura period, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The primary attraction of Chuguji is the Bodhisattva Pensive Statue. The figure, depicted with the right leg crossed and a finger gently touching the cheek, is world-renowned for its serene expression, known as one of the three great smiling statues. Visitors can also view a reproduction of the 'Tenjuko Mandala Embroidered Hanging,' which is said to depict the heavenly realm of Tenjuko as embroidered by Prince Shotoku's consort, Tachibana no Ohime. Other notable items include the Paper Made Monju Bosatsu and various Buddhist texts from the Nara period.
Chuguji offers a different beauty in every season. The temple is particularly beautiful during spring and autumn, when the surrounding nature enhances the tranquil atmosphere. Please note that visiting hours vary by season. From March to the end of November, the temple is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From December to the end of February, the hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visiting in the early afternoon allows for a more peaceful and meditative experience.
