Chozen-ji is a historic Buddhist temple located in Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture. It is recognized as one of the 'Togoku Hana no Tera' (one hundred temples of flowers in the eastern region), and is most famous for its stunning wisteria known as 'Kotsuhata no Fuji.' This wisteria is a designated Natural Monument of Saitama, with an estimated age of over 650 years. The sight of the vibrant blossoms draping the temple grounds makes it a symbolic and breathtaking destination that captures the essence of seasonal beauty.
The history of this temple dates back to 1474 (Bunmei 4), founded by the Kanto Kanrei, Uesugi Akisada. It is also closely associated with the second generation leader, Uesugi Norifusa. While the temple once possessed a much larger complex of buildings, much of it was lost to a devastating mountain fire in 1842. Today, the temple remains a deeply rooted place of worship and a vital sanctuary for preserving the natural heritage of the region, particularly the ancient wisteria.
The greatest highlight is the 'Kotsuhata no Fuji,' a Saitama Natural Monument. According to local lore, the name comes from the vine being used as a binding rope for luggage by the 19th-generation head priest. The sheer vitality of a tree that has lived for over 650 years is a marvel to witness. Visitors can enjoy the profound connection between history and nature, experiencing the serene atmosphere of a temple that has stood the test of time.
The most recommended time to visit Chozen-ji is from April to May, when the wisteria is in full bloom. During this period, the temple is transformed into a sea of purple and white blossoms. The temple is generally open from 8:00 to 17:00 (or 18:00). We recommend visiting in the morning when it is relatively cool, or in the late afternoon to see the wisteria illuminated by the soft, golden light. Please note that admission fees for junior high school students and adults may change during the peak blooming season.

The temple is located in the Honjo and Kodama area of Saitama, a region rich in historical charm. Most visitors arrive by car, and the temple is accessible via the Honjo-Kodama Interchange. The surrounding area features several other historical shrines and temples, making it an excellent stop for a cultural sightseeing route through Saitama.
As the temple grounds include gravel paths and some uneven surfaces, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Depending on the season, a parasol may be useful to enjoy the flowers in the sun. As this is a sacred Buddhist temple, please maintain a quiet demeanor and respect the local customs.
