Chotoku-ji is a temple famous for being one of the first places to signal the arrival of spring in Kyoto through its 'Okame Sakura' cherry blossoms. The most striking feature is the early-blooming variety situated in front of the temple's main gate. Because these blossoms appear earlier than most other varieties, the temple serves as an iconic symbol of the beginning of spring in the region. While much of the temple grounds are typically private, the area around the main gate is open for visitors to admire and photograph the seasonal scenery.
The history of this temple dates back to 1605 during the early Edo period. It was founded by Hasegawa Muneyoshi, a lord of the Settsu province. Throughout its history, the temple has undergone various changes, including periods of destruction and relocation, eventually settling in its current location where its traditions are still preserved today. It stands as an important site that tells the story of the local history and the surrounding environment.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the 'Okame Sakura' standing gracefully before the temple gate. Its beautiful form never fails to enchant visitors. Another unique highlight is the view where the cherry blossoms are reflected on the glass surface of the Jizo-do hall located to the right of the gate. This creates a breathtaking, one-of-a-kind view that blends natural beauty with architectural elements in a perfectly calculated aesthetic.
The most recommended time to visit Chotoku-ji is from February to March. The period when the 'Okame Sakura' reaches full bloom is a precious opportunity to feel the very first breath of spring in Kyoto.
