It is said to have been founded in 1185 by the famous shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo and belongs to the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect. The history of this temple stretches back to the Kamakura period. According to legend, it was established by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1185, deeply rooting the temple in the local history. Although the temple faced a period of decline during the Edo period, it was restored by Tokugawa Mitsukuna, the lord of the Mito domain, during the Genroku era (1688–1703). The current Sanmon (gate) is a relocated structure from Enpo's Fumon-in. Additionally, the national designated bronze bell bears the inscription 'Kyaku-sen Ya-haku Hitachi Sojo,' providing a precious historical record of the scenery in Itako during that era.

Chosho-ji boasts several cultural assets that captivate visitors. The main hall, with its traditional architectural style and massive thatched roof, is a must-see. Other significant highlights include the national designated bronze bell and various Buddhist statues, such as the wooden Kasyapa statue and Amida Nyorai. The temple grounds also feature a traditional wooden bell tower (bell stand), allowing visitors to observe the exquisite beauty of traditional Japanese temple architecture up close.
The temple offers different charms depending on the season. In spring, the cherry blossom trees lining the approach reach full bloom, creating a breathtaking view where white blossoms harmonize with the historic buildings. The surrounding area is also filled with lush greenery, making the early summer season equally beautiful. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate architectural details and the peaceful garden atmosphere.

Visitors can experience Japanese traditional architecture and culture firsthand. Through the observation of the historic building forms and the ancient inscriptions on the bronze bell, one can connect with the spiritual essence of Japan. Walking through the well-maintained temple grounds and the approach allows for a meditative stroll where nature and history seamlessly blend.
