Overview and Charm

Choko-ji is a historic Nichiren sect temple located in Sammu City, Chiba Prefecture. The most striking feature of this temple is the magnificent weeping cherry tree (Shidarezakura) located within its grounds. This tree is a designated natural monument of Sammu City, boasting an impressive age of approximately 300 years, a height of about 15 meters, and a trunk thickness of roughly 5 meters. It stands as a significant historical and natural symbol of the local region.

History and Cultural Background

The origins of Choko-ji date back to 1514 (the 11th year of the Eisho era) during the Sengoku period, when it was originally founded in what is now Nakata-cho, Chiba City. Later, in 1669 (the 9th year of the Kanbun era), the temple was relocated to its current site in Haniya, Sammu City, through the dedication of the 9th head priest, Jisen Shonin (who was from Haniya), and the local lord of Haniya, Inoue Chikugo-no-kami Masakiyo. Today, it is widely known as Shozanyama Choko-ji.
