The Chokai Blue Line is a breathtaking driving route that skirts the foot of Mt. Chokai, spanning across Yamagata and Akita Prefectures. The route is characterized by its panoramic views, including the sun setting over the Sea of Japan, a sky filled with stars, and the vast expanse of the Shonai Plain below. It attracts many visitors seeking to experience the harmony of mountains and sea through primeval beech forests, the serene Lake Chokai, and the ever-changing colors of the seasons.
The area is deeply rooted in a history of living in harmony with nature. For instance, the Juroku Rakan-i Rocks, carved to pray for maritime safety and the souls of those lost at sea, serve as an important cultural asset for the local fishing community. The area also holds literary significance, marked by a monument to the writer Atsushi Mori, who loved Mt. Chochai. Furthermore, following the eruption in 1974, a way to honor the mountain's history remains through the presence of the 'Nonomiya' shrine area near Ohira Sanso.
The route is dotted with diverse attractions. Near Ohira Sanso, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Sea of Japan and the Shonai Plain. Near Mikoshi, the lush primeval beech forests and clear natural springs create a tranquil atmosphere. Depending on the season, you can witness blooming Skunk Cabbage, or the beautiful flower paths of the Onozo district featuring cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and moss phlox. At night, the area becomes a premier spot for stargazing and watching the sunset over the ocean.
The landscape changes dramatically with each season. In spring (early to late April), you can see Skunk Cabbage and the colorful interplay of cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and moss phlox. Summer is ideal for hiking and nature observation, with deer often spotted in Shika Park from mid-June to mid-October. Autumn offers stunning foliage, while the road is closed during the winter season (November to late April). For the best experience, visit during the evening to witness the sunset or at night for the starry sky.
Beyond driving, the area supports various outdoor activities. Ohira Sanso serves as a base for mountain climbers, offering access for spring skiing, summer hiking, and autumn foliage viewing. From the hiking trails, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Chokai and various observation decks. Whether you are interested in nature observation, hiking, or a scenic drive to feel the seasonal shifts, there is something for everyone.
On the Yamagata side, the route passes through areas like Fukiura (Juroku Rakan-i Rocks), Ohira Sanso, and the Onozo district. On the Akita side, the route extends toward the Otaki and Nasoshiotaki waterfall areas. These surrounding regions allow visitors to touch upon the local history and culture amidst rich, natural scenery.
