The Chokai Blue Line is a scenic mountain road located between Yamagata and Akita Prefectures. This route winds around the base of Mt. Chokai, offering spectacular views of the majestic Sea of Japan. As your altitude increases, the view opens up to a breathtaking panorama of the Shonai Plain and the sea. On exceptionally clear days, you can even see distant islands on the horizon.
While this route was once a toll road, it has been developed into a free prefectural road. Mt. Chokai is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and has long been revered as a sacred peak. Driving this route allows you to feel the dynamic power of the natural landscape and the unique geological formations of the region.
The landscape changes significantly along the route as the elevation shifts. At the highest points, the view expands to include the horizon of the Sea of Japan, Sado Island, and the Oga Peninsula. A popular observation point is located near the 5th station of Mt. Chokai, offering highly rated views of the surrounding scenery. The route is characterized by winding hairpin curves typical of mountain roads, ensuring that every turn reveals a fresh and new perspective of the landscape.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. From May to October, you can enjoy the lush, beautiful natural landscapes. However, please note that certain sections are closed during the winter season (from early November to early April), so careful planning is required. For the best experience, drive during the daytime when the boundary between the sea and the sky is a vivid, striking blue.

The route is designed for enjoyment, with winding roads that make the journey as much a part of the experience as the destination. Near the foot of the mountain, there are various facilities such as mountain huts and eateries, making it a popular base for both hikers and travelers taking a break. Please drive carefully, as the road features many hairpin curves. Since you will be in a mountainous area, temperatures can drop significantly as you climb higher; we recommend bringing clothing that is easy to layer and provides warmth. To preserve the natural environment, please follow local etiquette and take all trash with you. If you plan to use facilities near the mountain, please carry cash as some may not accept cards.
