Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo sect, situated at the foot of Mt. Kacho (Kacho-yama) in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. Its formal name is Kacho-yama Chion Kyo-in Otani-dera. The temple grounds feature a massive complex built upon the site where the great monk Honen Shonin spread the teachings of Nembutsu and eventually passed away. The scale of the architecture is truly breathtaking, with numerous structures designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties, such as the Sanmon Gate, Miegodo Hall, and Daihojo.
Chion-in serves as a vital center for preserving the teachings of Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo sect. Most of the major structures visible today were constructed or rebuilt during the Edo period. For instance, the Sanmon Gate was erected in 1621 through the patronage of Tokugawa Hidetada, and the Miegodo Hall was rebuilt in 1639 by Tokugawa Iemitsu. This deep connection to the Tokugawa Shogunate is reflected in the grand architectural styles found throughout the temple grounds, showcasing the power and devotion of the era.

Chion-in reveals a different face with every season. Visiting during spring or autumn allows you to enjoy the changing colors of nature while walking through the vast grounds. Daytime is the best time to observe the intricate details of the massive Sanmon Gate and Miegodo Hall.
