Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo sect, situated at the foot of Mt. Kacho (Kacho-yama) in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. Its formal name is Kacho-yama Chion Kyo-in Otani-dera. The temple grounds feature a massive complex built upon the site where the great monk Honen Shonin spread the teachings of Nembutsu and eventually passed away.
