Shindata Falls is a prominent geosite within the 'Oita Bungo Ono Geopark' in Bungo Ono City, Oita Prefecture. The site is composed of a massive main waterfall (Ootaki) approximately 20m high and 100m wide, alongside a smaller tributary waterfall (Megotaki) approximately 18m high and 4m wide. The landscape is characterized by striking columnar jointing, and due to its impressive scale, it is often referred to as the 'Niagara of Bungo.' It is a place that perfectly symbolizes the raw, sculptural beauty of Oita's natural environment.
This location has been renowned as a famous waterfall since ancient times; during the Muromachi period, it even served as a subject for ink wash paintings. Geologically, the landscape is believed to have been formed by erosion following the filling of the valley during the eruption of Mount Aso approximately 90,000 years ago. Additionally, the area contains stone structures built during the Meiji era, offering a glimpse into the region's industrial history. On July 26, 2007, the site was officially designated as a Registered Monument of Japan in recognition of its significant natural value.
The greatest attraction is the two-tiered waterfall structure. The wide, powerful main waterfall of the Ono River and the slender tributary waterfall harmonize to create a single, breathtaking view. The appearance of the falling water changes with the seasons and water volume, offering different expressions throughout the year. Furthermore, the presence of stone ruins from a former power generation facility near the falls adds a unique historical dimension, where man-made industrial heritage coexists with the raw power of nature.
