The Chikyumarikumieru Oka Observatory is located at the summit of Mt. Atago, the highest point in the Hokoso district of Choshi, Chiba Prefecture. As its name suggests—meaning 'The Hill Where the Earth Looks Round'—the rooftop observatory provides a unique visual experience where the horizon forms a gentle arc, allowing visitors to physically sense the curvature of the Earth. On clear days, the 360-degree panorama reveals the silhouettes of distant Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, alongside the numerous wind turbines of Byobugaura, often referred to as the 'Cliffs of Dover in the East.' The best time to visit depends on what you wish to see. For a truly emotional experience, visit during sunset to see the sky and sea bathed in golden light. The observatory also holds special operating hours for the first sunrise of the year on January 1st. On this day, it opens at 5:30 AM to allow visitors to witness the spectacular start of the new year. Please note that since this involves very early morning operation in a cold season, thorough preparation is required. From spring to summer, the higher rate of clear skies increases the visibility of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba, making it an ideal time for panoramic sightseeing.
Beyond just viewing the scenery, you can engage with the local culture at the observatory. The second-floor event hall provides opportunities to learn about regional art through various exhibitions. You can also enjoy shopping for local Choshi delicacies at the first-floor shop. The rooftop area can be quite windy, so please bring clothing appropriate for the season. Especially during the early morning of New Year's Day, it can be extremely cold, so heavy way for warmth is highly recommended. Regarding payments: for entries before 7:00 AM, only cash or PayPay are accepted. Please check in advance if you intend to use credit cards or other electronic money, as availability may vary.
