The Chikuma River Embankment is a breathtaking cherry blossom destination located along the right bank of the Chikuma River in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture. It features a magnificent avenue of approximately 600 double-flowered cherry trees (Yaezakura) stretching over a distance of about 4km. Unlike the common single-petal Yoshino cherry, these double-flowered varieties offer a much more voluminous and lush appearance, making it a truly spectacular sight that heralds the arrival of spring. A unique highlight is the visual harmony found near the Obuse Bridge, where the pink of the cherry blossoms meets the bright yellow of the blooming rapeseed flowers (Nanohana), creating a vivid, multi-colored landscape.
This area is a place where nature and local life have been deeply intertwined through the flow of the Chikuma River for generations. Obuse Town itself is famous for its rich natural resources, particularly its fruit cultivation such as chestnuts and peaches. The seasonal scenery of cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers along the embankment is a vital part of the local identity, offering a rhythmic connection to the changing seasons that residents and visitors alike cherish.
The most significant attraction is the 4km-long avenue of double-flowered cherry trees. The dense, layered petals of the Yaezakura provide a sense of luxury and abundance that is highly photogenic. Additionally, the rapeseed flower park near the foot of the Obuse Bridge offers a stunning color contrast; seeing the pink blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers blooming simultaneously is a rare and beautiful sight. Depending on the timing, you may also see flowering peach trees, adding even more variety to the spring floral display.
The peak viewing season is typically from late April to early May. During this window, the synchronization of the pink cherry blossoms and yellow rapeseed flowers is at its best. While the scenery is beautiful under bright daylight, we recommend bringing sun protection for daytime strolls. Since the floral display depends heavily on the specific weather of the year, visiting during the peak window is highly recommended to ensure the best experience.
The primary activity is a relaxing walk along the embankment's walking paths. The 4km distance is an ideal length for a leisurely stroll while admiring the scenery. Since Obuse is also famous for its rich culinary culture, many visitors enjoy exploring local gourmet treats in the surrounding area before or after their walk.
For parking, it is highly recommended to use the Obuse General Park parking area. Please note that it is approximately a 20-minute walk from the parking area to the Rapeseed Flower Park near the Obuse Bridge. The surrounding area is also home to the historic streets of Obuse and many charming shops specializing in chestnut-based sweets.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as some parts of the embankment may have unpaved sections or slight slopes. Regarding payments, please check in advance if nearby shops or parking facilities accept cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards. As English-language signage and staff support may be limited, having a translation app handy is useful. To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette: do not pick or damage the flowers and enjoy the scenery responsibly.
