The Chikugogawa Shokai Bridge is a historic vertical-lift bridge spanning the Chikugo River, connecting Okawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga City in Saga Prefecture. It originally served as a railway bridge for the JNR Saga Line. Today, it is celebrated as Japan's oldest vertical-lift bridge, a structure where the central section moves vertically to allow river traffic. This unique mechanism has earned it recognition as both a National Important Cultural Property and a Mechanical Heritage site. Stretching approximately 507 meters, the bridge has been repurposed as a scenic pedestrian walkway, allowing visitors to walk through a living piece of industrial history while enjoying the vast views of the Chikugo River.
The history of this bridge dates back to 1935 (Showa 10). It was constructed as a vital link for the JNR Saga Line, with the design playing a central role in regional development. The engineering was a feat of its time, once hailed as the 'greatest movable bridge in the Orient.' Following the decommissioning of the Saga Line in 1987, there were concerns regarding its demolition; however, thanks to strong preservation efforts by local residents, the bridge was transferred to Okawa City in 1992. It reopened as a pedestrian walkway in 1996 and has since become a landmark of the region. Its designation as an Important Cultural Property in 2003 and its recognition as Mechanical Heritage by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2007 highlight its immense value as a technical legacy of Japan's modernization.
The most striking feature is the massive vertical-lift mechanism. Out of the 507-meter total length, the movable section is 24.2 meters long with a vertical lift height of 23 meters. Walking across the bridge offers a breathtaking view of the majestic Chikugo River and the surrounding natural landscape. At both ends of the bridge, well-maintained parks house historical artifacts, including monuments from the railway era and vintage three-lamp signals and alarms. These exhibits provide a tangible connection to the era when trains once thundered across this very spot.
Daylight hours are ideal for enjoying the scenery of the Chikugo River. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, making it a popular spot for photography, especially when the light hits the water or the sky changes color. Please note that the operation of the bridge (the lifting of the center section) may change based on the schedule of large vessels passing through. It is recommended to check local conditions if you are visiting for specific views. The parks at either end are perfect spots for a relaxing stroll or a short break.
As a pedestrian walkway, the bridge offers the unique experience of walking over a river on a historic industrial structure. You can observe the intricate mechanical parts up close while walking the path once used by trains. The surrounding parks allow for a leisurely pace where you can contemplate the history of the signals and monuments. The area around the Chikugogawa Shokai Bridge is rich with cultural spots. In the Okawa City direction (Fukuoka side), you can find Western-style architecture that once served as the office for Seiriki Shuzo, which now functions as a museum. On the Saga side, the landscape is characterized by the natural beauty of the Chikugo River, offering a peaceful environment for sightseeing and relaxation.
While the bridge is a public walkway, it is an open environment subject to wind and weather. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing a light windbreaker if visiting during breezy seasons. Please be mindful of other pedestrians when taking photographs. To ensure the preservation of this important cultural asset, please follow all posted rules. There are no fees or reservations required to walk across the bridge.
