The rapeseed blossoms spreading across the banks of the Chikugo River are one of the most iconic spring landscapes in Fukuoka Prefecture. From the vicinity of Kitano Town in Kurume City to Yoshii Town in Ukiha City, vast fields of bright yellow flowers bloom along both sides of the river. The sight of these golden flowers illuminated by the gentle spring sunlight, set against the flowing river, creates a truly magnificent and serene view.
The Chikugo River is a major river flowing through the four prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, and Oita. This region has a long history of thriving agriculture, and the blooming of rapeseed flowers has long been celebrated as a beautiful sign of the changing seasons. The biggest highlight is the 'Chigogawa Rapeseed Blossom Festival' held annually during the spring. For example, in Yoshii Town, Ukiha City, you can encounter unique cultural elements like 'Kote-e' (traditional plaster relief art) on building walls. Combining a visit to the flower fields with a trip to a nearby hot spring or a walk through a historical town makes for a complete and enriching travel experience.
As much of the area involves walking along riverbanks, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes.
