Chikugo Yoshii, located in Ukiha City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a traditional district that preserves the deep history of the Edo period. Once a thriving post station along the Bungo Kaido, the area is lined with white-walled storehouses (dozo) and heavy, elegant merchant houses. A standout feature is the 'Ikura-ya' architectural style—a unique design developed for fire prevention and storage—which creates a distinctive and majestic landscape. This region developed as a vital post town connecting the castle town of Kurume with the prosperous area of Hita during the Edo period. From the mid-Edo period, it became a center for commerce and financial activities, famously known for the 'Yoshii Kane' (Yoshii silver) wealth generated by local merchants. Following a major fire in 1869, the town transitioned toward the fire-resistant architecture seen today, with white plaster walls and tiled roofs. The preservation district contains approximately 250 traditional structures. A must-see is the 'Kagita Yashiki' (Former Koda Residence), a building dating back to 1863. It exemplifies the 'Ikura-ya' style, featuring a unique narrow layout designed to maximize garden space, with a well and washing area situated beside the entrance. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic streets lined with white-walled storehouses, historic shrines, and the stone bridges and steps that define the local cultural heritage.
