Senko no Ie (Tsubokawa-ke Residence) is a historic folk house located in Maruoka-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, which has existed since the late Middle Ages. This building is a rare architectural treasure that has been preserved in its original location without being moved. The grounds feature the 'Tsubokawa-shi Garden,' which showcases advanced landscaping techniques from the mid-E_do period, offering a landscape where architecture and nature are seamlessly integrated. Visitors can learn how people lived and adapted to the harsh environment of a heavy snowfall region through both the architecture and the garden.
The history of this residence is profound, with its origins tracing back to the late Middle Ages. It is said that the ancestors of the Tsubokawa family were high-ranking samurai, giving the lineage great prestige in this region. While there are no direct written documents to pinpoint the exact construction date, the architectural style—characterized by the finish of the pillars and beams and the use of three-legged support posts—indicates it retains the structural characteristics of the late Middle Ages. Furthermore, the Tsubokawa-shi Garden is a small-scale-stroll garden created during the Genroku to Hoei eras (approximately 1688–1710). The garden embodies a 'Garden of the Soul' or 'Garden of Prayer,' incorporating religious and philosophical elements through stone arrangements such as the Sanzon, Horai, and Suizan formations, a spiritual intent that has been preserved for centuries.
The greatest attractions are the medieval architectural style and the registered cultural property, the Tsubokawa-shi Garden. The garden offers a harmonious landscape of flowing water, a central pond, and lush groves of trees. The architecture itself is noteworthy for its structural adaptations to heavy snow and the use of natural textures in its pillars and beams. The garden displays different expressions with each season, offering a sense of traditional Japanese spatial beauty. Additionally, during the summer, local events such as 'Noryo Shower' (water spraying for fire prevention inspection) may take place.
