Iwakyo Gorge (Chiiwakyo) is a stunning gorge located in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and is officially designated as a National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The most striking feature of this area is the unique rock formations that give the gorge its name. Due to the dissolution of lime within the tuffaceous rock, breast-shaped stalactites have formed on the ceilings, which is why the area is known as 'Iwa' (Breast Rock) Gorge.
In addition to the sculptural beauty created by nature over countless years, the rock caves house many Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) statues, creating a unique space where nature and spiritual devotion blend seamlessly. Near the summit, you will find the 'Tsutenmon,' a magnificent natural stone gate that possesses an overwhelming presence, drawing visitors to its grandeur. A round trip to the summit of Mount Myojin (from the trailhead) takes about 6 hours excluding breaks, so thorough equipment and careful planning are essential. It is a rewarding experience to walk through such profound natural beauty.
The area surrounding Iwakyo Gorge is filled with abundant nature. For example, the route to climb Mount Myojin can be accessed via the 'Mitsuse Trailhead' on the Toei Town side. The Shinshiro and Toei areas also feature various local spots where you can enjoy regional delicacies and immerse yourself in the natural environment. Because the terrain around Iwakyo Gorge can be uneven and difficult to navigate, preparation is crucial. Regarding clothing, sturdy equipment such as hiking boots or trekking shoes is mandatory.
