The Campbelltown Bird Sanctuary was established in September 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Koshigaya City and Campbelltown, Australia. Spanning a total area of 5,350 square meters, the facility aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Australian nature. The centerpiece is a massive, approximately 3,000-square-meter birdcage where various Australian bird species live in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat, allowing for an intimate and educational viewing experience.
The sanctuary is rooted in the deep historical ties and cultural exchange between Koshigaya City in Saitama Prefecture and Campbelltown in Australia. Through the donation of birds and the creation of naturalistic exhibits to celebrate their sister-city partnership, the facility serves as a living bridge between the two regions, promoting cultural and ecological understanding through the shared beauty of Australian wildlife.
The most striking feature is the vast birdcage. Inside, you can observe colorful Australian parrots such as Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Crimson Rosellas, and Cockatiels. Beyond the avian wonders, the sanctuary also features dedicated areas for Emus and Wallabies (including the Red-necked Wallaby), offering a comprehensive look at the diversity of Australian fauna. The collection includes a wide variety of species such as Doves, Finches, and many types of Parakeets.
The sanctuary is a wonderful destination regardless of the season, as the birds' natural behaviors are always a delight to watch. For the best photography and observation, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended, as the vibrant colors of the feathers are most striking under the sun. However, please note that bird activity levels may change depending on the weather and temperature; it is wise to check the local forecast before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the expansive birdcage, observing Australian birds and wildlife from a very close distance. To enhance the educational aspect, the facility provides informative panels and color-coded identification sheets, allowing visitors of all ages to learn about the specific characteristics and names of the various bird species on display.
Situated within a scenic park area of Koshigaya City, Saitama, the sanctuary is surrounded by lush greenery and family-friendly park spaces. It is an ideal location for a full day out, as you can easily plan your visit alongside trips to nearby commercial facilities and local restaurants.
As the facility covers a large area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
