Byobuiwa Koyen is a scenic area located in Sonoi Village, Nara Prefecture, offering a stunning view of the Byobuiwa rock at an altitude of 940m. Situated on the western side of Mt. Kabuto, the rock is famous for its unique shape that resembles a folding screen (Byobu) standing upright on its southern face. The landscape stretches for 2km, forming a sharp, saw-toothed ridge with vertical cliffs reaching approximately 200m in height. These cliffs are characterized by a geological structure known as columnar jointing, creating a magnificent and unique natural sculpture.
Due to its extraordinary and unique geological appearance, Byobuiwa was designated as a National Natural Monument of Japan in December 1934. It has been cherished and protected as a vital natural heritage of the region for many years, symbolizing the historical and natural value of the area.
The primary attraction is the towering vertical cliff of columnar jointing. The sight of the 200m high cliffs stretching across 2km is truly overwhelming for visitors. In the park area at the foot of the cliffs, you can enjoy diverse plant life that changes with the seasons. In spring, the contrast between the white mountain cherry blossoms and the dark rock walls is spectacular. Additionally, during certain periods, various species like Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Azalea) bloom, adding vibrant colors to the landscape.
The appearance of the landscape changes significantly depending on the season. Spring (around April) is highly recommended to see the mountain cherry blossoms in full bloom. Autumn (October to November) is also a popular time to witness the vibrant colors of autumn leaves contrasting with the massive rock walls. These periods are ideal for observing the dynamic shifts in nature's palette.
This area is an excellent environment for hiking amidst nature. Visitors can enjoy hiking while feeling the sheer power of the cliffs up close and observing the intricate geological formations. Walking through the surrounding natural environment allows you to experience the changing flora and scenery of each season firsthand.
There are several facilities nearby where you can fully enjoy the nature of Sonoi Village. For example, the Sonoi Kogen Farm Garden is located within a designated quasi-national park. Additionally, nearby hot spring facilities like 'Sonoi Kogen Onsen Ogamenoyu' offer a perfect way to refresh and relax after a day of walking and exploring the natural scenery.
