Nomura Samurai Residence is a historic samurai residence located in a corner of the Nagamachi Samurai District, an area famous for its preserved cobblestone streets and earthen walls. The residence is characterized by its prestigious architecture and a beautifully manicured Japanese garden. It was notably featured as a two-star site in the 2009 Michelin Green Guide Japon, highlighting its exceptional quality. Furthermore, it was ranked 3rd in a Japanese garden ranking by a prominent US garden magazine in 2003, proving its global reputation as a masterpiece of landscape design.
This residence preserves the architectural style of a samurai dwelling from the era of the Kaga Clan. Inside, visitors can view authentic swords and armor associated with the Kaga Clan, serving as precious historical artifacts that illustrate the daily life and culture of the samurai. The 'Jodan-no-ma' (upper room) features exquisite sliding door paintings (fusuma-e) created by artists associated with the Kaga Clan, showcasing a seamless integration of architecture and fine art that defines traditional Japanese culture.
The greatest attraction is the world-renowned Japanese garden. The garden changes its expression with every season, creating a harmonious landscape alongside the architecture that captivates all who visit. The garden of Nomura Residence offers a different beauty depending on the season. In spring and summer, the lush greenery is striking; in autumn, the vibrant foliage takes center stage; and in winter, the garden is transformed by a serene way of seeing snow. Please note the seasonal operating hours: from April to September, the residence is open until 17:30, and from October to March, it closes at 16:30. We recommend arriving well before the closing time, as final entry is typically 30 minutes prior to closing.
