Bisa no Hana is the westernmost cape of Honshu island, located in Yoshimu, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Situated at 34°6'38"N and 130°51'37"E, it serves as a significant geographical boundary. A well-maintained observation plaza sits at an elevation of 120 meters, offering an unobstructed, vast view of the Sea of Japan.
This area holds historical significance as the edge of the main island of Japan. It is a key destination for the 'Honshu Four Extremities Completion Rally,' where travelers attempt to visit the four furthest points of the island. The area is also home to local history, including shrines dedicated to figures like Nakayama Tadamitsu from the late Edo period. The culture of collecting proof of reaching the westernmost point of Honshu is deeply rooted here, drawing many travelers seeking to commemorate their journey.
The primary attraction is the observation plaza at the 120-meter high point. From here, you can gaze out over the vast Sea of Japan and see the island of Katai approximately 5km to the west. It is renowned for having one of the latest sunsets on the Honshu mainland; the shifting colors of the sky are a unique spectacle found only here. While a stone monument marks the exact westernmost point, access to the monument itself may be restricted for management purposes.
The cape can be visited year-round, but the sunset hours are highly recommended. To witness the spectacular sun sinking into the Sea of Japan, it is crucial to time your visit with the local sunset. Because the scenery changes rapidly as the sun goes down, the atmosphere of the location varies beautifully depending on the exact time of day.
Access to the observation plaza is via a well-maintained walking path from the parking area (approx. 200m). It is a peaceful environment perfect for a stroll while enjoying the scenery. A unique activity is obtaining the 'Westernmost Honshu Arrival Certificate' to document your journey. These certificates can be purchased for 100 JPY at various tourist information centers, such as JR Shimonoseki Station, Shin-Shimonoseki Station, or other local tourism terminals.
The surrounding Yoshimu area is rich in natural beauty. Nearby, you can find beautiful beaches with shallow waters, camping sites, and areas suitable for marine sports. The region is also dotted with historical shrines and natural parks, allowing travelers to explore both the natural landscapes and the local history.
