Bijinrin Forest is a breathtaking beech forest spanning approximately 3 hectares in the Matsunoyama district of Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. The forest earned its name, "Bijinrin" (Beautiful Forest), due to the elegant and slender silhouettes of its 100-year-old beech trees. The area has a unique history: in the late Taisho era, the trees were once completely harvested for charcoal, leaving a barren mountain. However, the following year, the power of nature took hold as beech trees spontaneously sprouted and grew all at once, creating the magnificent landscape seen today. It is a spot that showcases the incredible resilience and regenerative power of nature.
The history of this land dates back to the late Taisho era. At that time, the beech trees were entirely cleared for charcoal production, leaving the mountain completely bare. Remarkably, just one year later, the natural force of the environment caused the beech trees to sprout simultaneously, leading to the rebirth of this lush forest. This dramatic cycle of destruction and rebirth, combined with the graceful stature of the trees, is the origin of the name "Bijinrin."
The greatest charm of Bijinrin is the changing expression of the beech trees through the seasons. You can enjoy vastly different landscapes depending on when you visit: fresh green buds emerging from the snow in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, brilliant yellow and orange hues in autumn, and a serene, white snowscape in winter. The forest is also a sanctuary for many bird species, maintaining a rich and healthy ecosystem.
