Bihoro Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass located in the northeastern part of Hokkaido, within the Okhotsk region. Situated along National Route 243, it serves as a renowned observation point where visitors can look down upon the magnificent caldera topography and the famous lakes of Hokkaido, such as Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu. It also functions as an excellent rest stop for drivers, with the viewpoint being easily accessible directly from the parking area.

In winter, the pass is enveloped in a serene, snow-covered silence. For the most spectacular experience, we highly recommend visiting during sunrise or sunset. During the evening hours, the sky undergoes a dramatic transformation, often painting the lake in shades of gold and crimson. The crisp, clear air of the early morning also offers a uniquely refreshing view.
The primary activity here is the peaceful observation of the landscape. It is a perfect place to pull over during a scenic drive to take photographs or simply rest and breathe in the fresh air. Interestingly, this region is also known as a base for sky sports, such as paragliding and hang gliding, allowing enthusiasts to experience the landscape from a bird's-eye view. Spending time in this tranquil setting allows for a deep sense of detachment from the bustle of daily life.
Many famous tourist spots are scattered around Bihoro Pass, including the iconic Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu. Because of its high altitude, the temperature at Bihoro Pass tends to be significantly lower than in the lowlands. It can also become quite windy, so we strongly recommend bringing a warm jacket or an extra layer of clothing, regardless of the season. While the viewpoint is a public space and generally free to access, please be prepared with cash if any local services require it. For photography, please enjoy the scenery without disturbing the natural environment. The site is equipped with accessible parking and entrances for wheelchair users.
