Located in the town of Biei, the "Patchwork Road" refers to the scenic landscape of rolling hills where crops such as potatoes, wheat, and sugar beets are cultivated. The name comes from the way the different colors of the crops, depending on the season and variety, create a visual effect similar to a colorful patchwork quilt. The vast green hills, the distant peaks of the Tokachi mountain range, and the accent of lonely poplar trees create a landscape that serves as a quintessential symbol of Hokkaido.
This beautiful landscape is not merely a natural phenomenon but is deeply intertwined with the history of agriculture. To prevent soil exhaustion caused by continuous cultivation of the same crop, farmers have historically practiced crop rotation. This agricultural wisdom has resulted in the colorful, patchwork-like scenery seen today. The "Patchwork Hills Walk" is an experiential tour that allows you to enjoy the scenery while staying active. Please note that this tour is intended for elementary school students and above, and participants should be capable of walking for approximately 2 hours in good physical health.
