Beppu Tower is a 100-meter tall tourist tower located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Built in 1957, it is famously known as the third tallest tower built in Japan, following the Nagoya TV Tower and Tsutenkaku. In 2007, it was designated as a 'Registered Tangible Cultural Property,' cementing its status as a beloved symbol of Beppu. Between 2022 and 2023, the tower underwent a major renovation, which included replacing the observation deck glass, adding more LED lighting, and restoring the color of the steel structures to preserve its historical aesthetic while embracing modern technology.
The tower was originally conceived as the centerpiece for the 1957 Beppu Hot Spring Tourism Industry Grand Exhibition. While it was expected to serve as a radio tower during its construction, the tower's history has seen various challenges, including the end of advertising neon sign contracts and periods of management crisis. However, in 2021, the tower entered a new era under the ownership of Kaisei Jisho Trust Co., Ltd., which implemented a large-scale renovation. This project successfully restored the tower's original charm while evolving it into a modern facility that integrates contemporary lighting and structural improvements.

The primary attraction is the observation deck located 55 meters above the ground. Here, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, providing a bird's-eye perspective of the surrounding topography and the cityscape. At night, the tower comes alive with LED illuminations. A key feature is the way the lighting colors change according to the season or specific events. For instance, the tower may be lit in specific colors (such as red, white, or green) to commemorate certain people or special occasions, making every visit a unique visual experience.
The nighttime illumination runs from sunset until 23:00. The lighting displays often feature different themes, such as 'WINTER Light-up' or 'Autumn Color Light-up,' depending on the season. Because the colors can change for special anniversaries or events, we highly recommend checking the official schedule in advance. While the daytime offers clear, bright views of the landscape, the nighttime offers a dramatic view of the illuminated tower set against the city lights.

The main experience is the panoramic viewing from the observation deck. Through the newly replaced, high-quality glass, you can clearly observe the streets of Beppu and the beautiful expanse of Beppu Bay. Visiting in alignment with the illumination schedule allows you to see the tower transformed into a colorful landmark, providing a perfect backdrop for photography.
The tower is located in the Kitahama area of Beppu City, surrounded by the vibrant urban center. It serves as a great starting point for exploring the local city area and nearby attractions.
