Beppu Benten Pond is a breathtaking spring located within the Akiyoshidai Karst Plateau in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Water Sources, the pond has a depth of approximately 4 meters and boasts incredible clarity, allowing you to see straight to the bottom. The most striking feature is the way the water surface shifts between cobalt blue and turquoise depending on the angle of the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that draws visitors from far and wide. The pond is formed by groundwater emerging from the bottom of a depression known as a 'doline'.
The site is steeped in local legend. It is said that an ancient wealthy man, struggling with a water shortage while attempting to cultivate the land, received guidance from an old man in a dream. Following the instructions from the dream, a ritual was performed, and the spring began to flow. Today, the area is treated with great respect as part of the Beppu Izumi Shrine grounds. Every September on the first Sunday, the 'Beppu Nenbutsu Odori'—a dance designated as an intangible cultural property of Yamaguchi Prefecture—is performed, preserving the deep-rooted traditions of the local community.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the shifting colors of the water. The high transparency of the water, combined with the reflection of light, creates a vivid blue gradation. This phenomenon is caused by the refraction of light through the minerals and calcium present in the water. Additionally, visitors can observe the unique geological features of the Karst plateau. The surrounding environment is peaceful, providing a perfect setting to contemplate the harmony between light, water, and nature.
Beppu Benten Pond is accessible throughout the year. While the scenery is beautiful in every season, we highly recommend visiting during times of strong sunlight. The way the water transitions from cobalt to turquoise depending on the sun's angle offers a different expression of beauty at various times of the day. It is a wonderful way to experience the harmony of natural light and water.
Adjacent to the pond is the 'Mine City Trout Farm,' where visitors can enjoy the experience of trout fishing. This allows you to connect with nature through the experience of fresh fish in a rich natural environment. Please note that the spring water is also used for local livelihoods, including irrigation and aquaculture. Because the water is a vital resource for the local community, touching the water or any actions that might pollute it are strictly prohibited.
Beppu Benten Pond is located within the Akiyoshidai area, a world-famous karst plateau.
