Bansui Sodo is the former residence where Doi Bansui, a renowned poet and English scholar from Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, spent his later years. Today, it serves as a cultural facility dedicated to preserving his life and literary legacy. The site is much more than just a house; it is a place where literature, history, and nature intertwine. The architecture itself holds significant historical value, and the garden features resilient flora that survived the devastating Sendai air raids, symbolizing the endurance of both nature and culture.
Doi Bansui was a distinguished figure who served as a lecturer at the Tohoku Imperial University (now Tohoku University). In 1945, the Sendai air raids caused the loss of his residence and approximately 30,000 volumes of his collection. However, through the dedication of his students and local supporters, a new residence was constructed on the original site in 1949. Following his passing at age 80 in 1952, the residence was donated to the city of Sendai and opened to the public as "Bansui Sodo." Although the site underwent temporary closures due to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, it has since been fully restored and reopened to visitors.
Near the entrance of the residence, you will find a stone monument engraved with "Tenchi Yujo" (Sentiments of Heaven and Earth), the title of the first poetry collection published by Bansui in 1899. Inside, the museum displays his books, photographs, and personal items, such as the bed he used, providing a vivid glimpse into the lifestyle of a great intellectual. A special highlight is the Osmania regiae (sweet osmanthus) tree in the garden. This tree miraculously survived the air raids and is known to bloom with white flowers around October 19th, the anniversary of Bansui's death, creating a deeply poetic atmosphere.

Visiting around the anniversary of Doi Bansui's death allows you to witness the white blossoms of the Osmania regiae, which adds a profound literary sentiment to the scenery. Visiting during daylight hours is best for appreciating the intricate details of the historical architecture and the lush garden plants.

Bansui Sodo is located in Omachi, Aoba Ward, Sendai. The area is rich with cultural facilities and historical streetscapes. It is easily accessible from Aoba-dori Ichibancho Station on the Sendai Subway Tozai Line. Additionally, it is near stops for the "Loople Sendai" sightseeing bus, making it a convenient stop when planning a tour of Sendai's various landmarks.
Admission is free. For local transportation to the site, using a transit IC card or cash is recommended.
