Bando Garden is a scenic destination located in Saikazaki, Wakayama City, surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is designated as a special area of the Seto Inland Sea National Park and is famous as the site of the "Moto Bando (Moto Bando Odai)," a historical defense base for the Kishu Clan. The garden features vast lawns and approximately 440 pine trees, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and sky. It is a place where nature and history blend seamlessly, carrying a legacy that dates back to the era of the Manyoshu poetry collection.
Known as "Bando no Hana," this area has long served as a vital lookout point to protect the Kishu Clan's maritime borders. During the early Edo period, it was an important defense post near Wakayama Castle. In 1854, following the arrival of Commodore Perry, the "Moto Bando Odai" was constructed to strengthen coastal defenses. Historical records detailing the deployment of cannons and personnel remain, making this a significant site for understanding Japan's maritime history. Furthermore, the area holds deep cultural value; during the Manyoshu era, poets composed verses about the fishing fires of Saigaura in connection with the imperial visits of Emperor Shomu.
The garden is filled with elements that evoke its historical past. The expansive lawn area is situated on a unique topography surrounded by the sea, providing an open and refreshing atmosphere. Visitors can encounter stone monuments and tablets dedicated to Manyoshu poetry, allowing a connection to ancient Japanese literary culture. Additionally, the coastal beauty of the "Kishu Blue Stone" (Greenschist) is a distinctive feature of this area. It is a perfect spot to enjoy the aesthetic beauty of nature while reflecting on the memories of the former "Odai" defense-site.
Bando Garden reveals a different face throughout the seasons. From April to August, the contrast between the bright blue sky and the sea is particularly striking during daylight hours. From September to March, the park operates with earlier closing times, offering a more tranquil atmosphere for viewing the scenery. Please note that the final entry is 30 minutes before closing. The sunset at this location is especially beautiful, offering an emotional landscape that has been celebrated in ancient poetry for centuries.
You can enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by nature. The spacious lawns and available benches make it a great place to enjoy a packed lunch (please note that cooking with fire is strictly prohibited). Vending machines are available on-site for drinks. While exploring the natural environment, you may notice the local culture of fishing, as the surrounding coast is famous for sea bream fishing. Please be aware that the use of drones is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
Near the garden, Route 151 offers views overlooking the Saikazaki Fishing Port. The nearest bus stop is "Saikazaki Yuen," which is approximately a 15-minute walk from the garden. As amenities like restaurants and souvenir shops are limited in the immediate vicinity, it is recommended to check availability or prepare in advance.
As the terrain is near the coast, please move safely. While there is no specific dress code, comfortable footwear suitable for coastal terrain is recommended. Pets (dogs) are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times. Please ensure you take all your trash home with you. Drone flight is strictly prohibited. Additionally, please note that parking space is limited and large buses cannot be accommodated.
