Bandai-ji Temple, also known as Abuto Kannon, is a temple situated on a steep cliff facing the Seto Inland Sea at the tip of the Numakuma Peninsula in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The sight of the vibrant vermilion pillars and beams contrasting against the deep blue sky and sea has captivated visitors for centuries. This location is historically significant, having been depicted in the famous Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo-period artist Utagawa Hiroshige. The unique architectural style, which seems to lean out over the sea, offers a profound sense of connection to the surrounding islands and the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea.
The Kannon Hall is recognized as a cultural asset of great historical value. Local tradition suggests the current structure was established by Mori Terumoto, a powerful warlord of the Sengoku period, lending the site a sense of historical weight. For generations, it has been a sacred place for prayers regarding safe childbirth and maritime safety. One of its unique historical features is the specific style of Ema (votive tablets) offered within the main hall, reflecting a deep-rooted culture where nature and faith are inextricably linked.
The greatest attraction is the vermilion Kannon Hall standing atop the cliff. The corridor, which extends toward the sea, is designed to make visitors feel as if they are floating above the water. Because the railings are built relatively low, you can enjoy an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. Beyond the architectural beauty, the harmony between the temple and the natural landscape is a major highlight. The colors of the sea and the expression of the sky change constantly depending on the season and time of day, ensuring a fresh experience with every visit.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, the atmosphere changes significantly with the light. A morning visit offers fresh air and bright, sparkling waters, but the most striking time is during twilight (Tasogare). As the sun sets, the golden light drenches the vermilion building and the sea, creating a powerful and unforgettable scene where the colors of the temple appear even deeper and more intense.
Visitors can enjoy a moment of tranquility while gazing at the beautiful archipelago of the Seto Inland Sea. To see the temple from a different perspective, you can take a local cruise through the surrounding waters. Viewing the vermilion hall from a boat provides a unique vantage point that differs entirely from the view from the land.
Nearby is the historic port town of Tomonoura, famous for its preserved streets and its connection to the historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma. Combining a visit to Bandai-ji with a cruise around the islands of the Seto Inland Sea allows for a much deeper exploration of the region's charm.
