Agatsuma Valley is a beautiful gorge stretching approximately 2.5 km along the Agatsuma River, spanning from Higashiagatsuma Town to Nagarano Town in Gunma Prefecture. Recognized as the nationally designated scenic spot 'Agatsuma Gorge,' its grand scale has earned it the nickname 'The Yabakei of Kanto.' The riverbanks are lined with lush vegetation, including maple, oak, and red pine, creating a dramatic and colorful landscape that changes dramatically with each season. The dynamic interplay between the river's flow and the natural rock formations continues to captivate all who visit.
The region has long been blessed by its rich natural environment. The landscape was shaped over many years by the erosion of the Agatsuma River through Miocene volcanic rocks, such as altered andesite and tuff breccia. This process has created a diverse topography of river bends, rapids, deep pools, and striking rock formations. The beauty of this area is culturally significant, once being described in the 'Jomo Karuta' poetry as a landscape rivaling the famous Yabakei. While it was once a difficult passage between east and west, it has now been transformed into an accessible destination with well-maintained roads and walking paths for enjoying nature up close.
The greatest charm of Agatsuma Valley is the shifting colors of the trees. In spring, the Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Azalea) blooms in vibrant purplish-red, while early summer brings a refreshing wave of bright new greenery. The autumn foliage season is particularly spectacular, as maple trees turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, enveloping the entire gorge in a fiery glow. A key highlight is the hiking trail leading from the valley parking lot to the 'Shohorai' observation deck. This approximately 60-minute one-way walk offers two distinct perspectives: a view from near the river level and a panoramic view from the high vantage point, allowing visitors to experience the natural architecture from different angles.
Because the landscape changes so drastically, the charm of the valley depends heavily on when you visit. Late April features the beautiful spring blossoms, while early May offers the vibrant energy of fresh greenery. The most popular time is from mid-October to early November, when the autumn colors reach their peak. Please note that the walking paths may be closed during the winter season, so plan your visit according to the season. For the clearest views of the river's transparency and the vivid colors of the trees, visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
