Ayabeyama Plum Grove is a beautiful plum orchard situated on a high elevation in Mitsu-cho, Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture, offering a sweeping view of the Seto Inland Sea. Centered around Mt. Ayabe (approx. 144.5m elevation), the grove is filled with numerous plum trees that burst into a spectacle of red and white blossoms with the arrival of spring. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Shinmaiko Beach coastline (a National Park area), the Ieshima Islands, Shodoshima, Awaji Island, and even the distant islands of Shikoku. It is a unique location where natural beauty and historical vestiges coexist.
This area is not merely a scenic spot but also holds significant historical value. The site is dotted with more than 20 ancient burial mounds (kofun) believed to have been constructed between the 5th and 7th centuries, allowing visitors to feel the presence of ancient history. The history of this land, which has evolved alongside nature, is deeply rooted in the current landscape of the plum grove. Additionally, the surrounding area features facilities like the 'World Plum Park,' adding a layer of cultural depth to the region.
The most striking feature is the stunning contrast between the blooming red and white plum blossoms and the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea below. During the peak season, the fragrance of the white plums fills the air, providing a sensory experience of spring that goes beyond just sight. Exploring the grove also offers the unique opportunity to observe the ancient kofun (burial mounds) while walking. Furthermore, in recent years, the landscape of rapeseed flowers (nanohana) in the nearby fields often blooms around the same time as the plums, creating a rich, colorful tapestry of scenery.
The plum blossoms typically begin to bloom in mid-February and reach full bloom from late February to early March. Visiting during this window ensures you see the most vibrant colors. The season is characterized by the refreshing scent of plum blossoms carried on the early spring breeze. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours; the bright sunlight makes the details of the islands and the coastline much clearer and enhances the vividness of the flower colors.
The primary way to enjoy the grove is through a leisurely stroll through nature. You can walk while admiring the blossoms and exploring the historical burial mounds. Depending on the timing, there may also be local events related to plums or even sales of green plums (ao-ume). While the scenery is the main draw, the area offers a chance to touch upon local culture and history. Please note that some paths have slopes, so it is important to walk carefully.
There are several nearby attractions to expand your itinerary. These include the 'World Plum Park' within the Mitsu Nature Observation Park and the beautiful Shinmaiko Beach.
