The Atami Summer Sea Fireworks Display is a historic event held over the waters of Atami Bay in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Originally started in 1952 to pray for disaster recovery, this event has become a signature tradition of Atami, with approximately 10 to 15 displays held throughout the year. Typically, about 3,000 fireworks are launched over a 20-minute period from 20:20 to 20:40. The unique topography, where the bay is surrounded by mountains on three sides, acts as a 'natural stadium,' allowing spectators in many parts of the city to experience the intense light and powerful sound of the fireworks.
The origins of this fireworks display date back to 1952. It was established by local residents to pray for recovery following the devastating impacts of Typhoon Kitty in 1949 and the Great Atami Fire in 1950. In addition to the traditional August 5th display, the event is held during various seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—serving as a cultural symbol of the region's resilience and continuous development.
The fireworks are launched from the area between the 'Nanahan Pier' in the north of Atami Port and the sea fishing facilities. The greatest highlights are the meticulously choreographed 'Digital Star Mine' and the grand finale, the 'Great Aerial Niagara.' While standard displays feature fireworks up to size 10 (1-shaku), the final display in August features a massive size 20 (2-shaku) firework, offering an exceptionally large-scale spectacle. Due to the terrain, spectators at Atami Sun Beach, Shinsui Park, and the Nagisa-cho area can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sky being completely covered in light.
The schedule for the Atami Sea Fireworks varies by season. Displays differ depending on whether they are held in Spring (April–June), Summer (July–August), Autumn (September–October), or Winter (December). For example, on the last Friday of November and January, smaller-scale displays of about 1,500 fireworks may be held for roughly 10 minutes. Additionally, during the Christmas period from December 23rd to 25th, a short 5-minute display accompanied by music is held. Since the number of fireworks and the scale of the production change depending on the season, it is essential to check the schedule in advance.
On the day of the fireworks, dozens of food stalls (yatai) appear near the Shinsui Park deck at Atami Sun Beach. Waiting for the fireworks while enjoying local gourmet snacks is a quintessential part of the Japanese summer festival experience. If you are staying at a hotel affiliated with the Atami Onsen Hotel & Ryokan Cooperative, special free viewing seats may be provided for guests. Alternatively, you can secure a premium view by using paid spectator seats (approximately 1,000 JPY per seat).
The primary viewing spots are Atami Sun Beach, Shinsui Park, Nagisa Koen Park, and the Nagisa-cho area. These locations are close to the launch site, allowing you to feel the impact of the explosions directly. Other nearby areas such as Ito, Izukogen, and Ajiro also host various fireworks displays during similar periods.
