Atami Baien is a municipal garden spanning 4.4 hectares in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is renowned for hosting the earliest plum blossoms in Japan and the latest autumn foliage. The garden features 469 plum trees across 60 different varieties, including ancient trees over 100 years old. Additionally, with approximately 380 autumn maple trees, the garden offers a stunning display of seasonal changes throughout the year. The space harmonizes nature and culture, reflecting the history of Atami as a famous hot spring resort.
The history of this garden dates back to 1886 (Meiji 19). It began when Seisai Choyo of the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed the need for a walking park to encourage moderate exercise alongside hot spring treatments. At one point, the area was managed as imperial-owned land, lending it a prestigious historical atmosphere. Following a major renovation in 2008, the garden now stands as a representative cultural facility of Atami, where modern amenities coexist with traditional landscapes.
The garden is filled with diverse elements that shape its beautiful scenery. A key feature is the 'Baien Go-kyo' (Five Bridges of the Plum Garden) spanning the Hatsukawa River: Zenka, Geigetsu, Sobi, Chujo, and Kofu. These bridges serve as vital accents for your stroll. Another highlight is the 'Korean Garden,' constructed in 2001 to commemorate Japan-South Korea summits, recreating the style of a 400-year-old Korean residence. Visitors can also enjoy the 'Masahiro Sawada Memorial Museum,' which showcases works by the Order of Culture recipient, and the relaxing 'Ashiyu' (footbath) located in the inner part of the garden.
The garden's appearance changes drastically depending on the season. From early January to early March, the 'Plum Festival' celebrates the blooming of early-flowering plum varieties. From May to June, you can enjoy the fresh greenery, and from mid-November to early December, the 'Autumn Leaf Festival' allows you to witness the season's latest colors. During certain periods, night illuminations are held, creating a magical and ethereal landscape different from the daytime.
Beyond walking through nature, there are many cultural experiences available. Near the Korean Garden, you can enjoy the 'Ashiyu' (footbath) to relax in warm water while surrounded by nature, especially during the Plum and Autumn Leaf festivals. At the Masahiro Sawada Memorial Museum, you can connect with Japanese art through sculpture. The grounds are also dotted with various poem monuments and stone inscriptions, allowing you to feel the historical depth of the site.
The area surrounding Atami Baien is a tranquil residential and resort district lined with historic hotels and luxury apartments. It is within walking distance of JR Kinomiya Station and offers easy access to the lively shopping streets and beach areas around Atami Station. Since the area is famous for its hot springs, many visitors combine a visit to the garden with a hot spring tour.
As the garden features gentle slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please choose clothing appropriate for the season. For the paid areas during the Plum Festival or for museum entry, both cash and credit cards are generally accepted. While some English signage is available, it is best to check details on the official website in advance. To protect the plants and facilities, please stay on the designated paths.
