Atagawa Onsen is a historic hot spring area located in Higashi-Izu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture. The town features a unique landscape where approximately 19 traditional inns and hotels are nestled along a narrow terrain where mountains meet the sea. The most striking feature is the incredibly high temperature of the hot spring source, which reaches nearly 100°C, causing constant plumes of steam to rise from the source wells. This sight of a 'town enveloped in steam' offers visitors a deeply nostalgic and authentic glimpse into Japanese hot spring culture. Beyond the hot springs, the area provides opportunities to connect with nature and wildlife through unique facilities and the adjacent beautiful coastline.
The history of this area traces back to legends of its discovery. It is said that the monk Ota Dokan discovered the hot springs after witnessing a monkey healing its wounds in the water flowing from the riverbed. While the area has been a beloved place of healing for centuries, it has also faced challenges, including a major inn fire in 1969, earthquake damage in 1978, and another hotel fire in 1986. Having overcome these hardships, the town has regained its vitality as a vibrant tourist destination. Local culture also maintains deep respect for traditions such as the 'Oyakake Benzaiten' (water-splashing deity) worship.

Atagawa Onsen offers a blend of traditional hot spring atmosphere and modern leisure. A standout attraction is the 'Atagawa Banana Crocodile Garden,' which consists of three areas (Main Garden, Crocodile Garden, and Branch Garden) where you can observe crocodiles, tropical plants, and red pandas. For relaxation, you can visit 'Atagawa Hot Park,' a free footbath located along the coast where you can listen to the waves, or the 'Atagawa Yunohana Park' footbath located near Atagawa Station, perfect for a quick break during your travels.
While hot springs can be enjoyed year-round, the area becomes especially lively in summer (July and August) when the 'Atagawa YOU YU Beach' attracts many visitors for swimming. During this season, local fireworks displays add to the excitement. To experience the most atmospheric side of the town, we recommend strolling through the streets during twilight or early morning when the rising steam is most visible against the quiet scenery. The combination of seasonal nature and warm waters provides a truly healing experience.

There is much more to do here than just soaking in a bath. At the Atagawa Banana Crocodile Garden, you can enjoy a naturalistic experience observing rare animals and tropical flora. For relaxation, the seaside footbaths are ideal for unwinding from daily fatigue. By combining beach leisure with hot spring culture, you can enjoy the best of both the sea and the mountains. The area offers diverse ways to enjoy the environment, from utilizing the natural heat of the springs to exploring the local biodiversity.
Several other charming hot spring areas surround Atagawa Onsen, such as Okawa Onsen, Kitagawa Onsen, and Inatori Onsen, each offering a different atmosphere. The coastline of Higashi-Izu Town also features beautiful beaches and scenic drives. Access from Izukyu Atagawa Station is excellent, making it easy to include this area in a larger sightseeing itinerary through the Izu Peninsula toward Ito or Atami.
