Ashinomaki Onsen is a beautiful hot spring destination located in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. The hot spring town is situated on high ground overlooking the Agha River, offering a breathtaking landscape that harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding nature. The water is a simple chloride spring with a source temperature of approximately 60°C. The history of this area is deeply rooted in legend, with stories suggesting that the hot springs were discovered by the monks Gyoki or Kobo Daishi. While it was once a small-scale local hot spring during the Edo period, the opening of a new road in 1902 (Meiji 35) marked the beginning of its development into a significant hot spring destination.
The town's elevated position provides stunning views of the Agha River and the rich natural scenery. A key highlight is the Kenseishin-sha Shrine, which enshrines the deity Kensei, located right near a popular footbath area. Visitors can find various footbaths scattered throughout the town, perfect for a refreshing break during a stroll. Ashinomaki Onsen reveals a different face with every season. The months of April/May and October/November are particularly beautiful, as the changing colors of the landscape are highly visible. The hot spring town is connected to the major sightseeing routes of Aizuwakamatsu. While nearby landmarks like the Okawa Dam and the Aizu Railway station are close, the local topography can make walking difficult. It is highly recommended to use shuttle buses or local bus services for easier access from the station. Depending on the season, sightseeing buses connecting Aizuwakamatsu Station with other major hubs may also be available.
