The Lake Ashi Sightseeing Cruise operates regular routes around Lake Ashi, located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. The history of the cruise dates back to the origins of the Hakone Yusen Co., Ltd., established in 1920, with the first Japanese catamaran sightseeing boat debuting in 1961. Today, the fleet features state-of-the-art catamarans such as the 'SORAKAZE,' which launched in February 2024, and the 'Daichakai,' which launched in December 2025. Because these vessels are supported by two hulls, they offer exceptional stability and a very smooth ride across the lake. The 360-degree observation decks provide an unobstructed view of the magnificent Hakone mountain range and the iconic Mt. Fuji.
The history of Hakone's water transport is deeply rooted in the region. Lake Ashi has long been a vital transport hub, and during the Edo period, the nearby Hakone Checkpoint served as a crucial control point. The modern catamaran technology used today has evolved to ensure a stable and comfortable sightseeing experience. Notably, the new vessel 'Daichakai' is designed around the concepts of 'Omotenashi' (Japanese hospitality) and 'Ichi-go Ichi-e' (once-in-a-lifetime encounter). From the deck, you can admire breathtaking historical landscapes. Near the Hakone Checkpoint Pier, you can see the reconstructed Edo-period checkpoint. On clear days, the observation deck is the perfect spot for a photo with Mt. Fuji in the background. The route offers diverse scenery, including views of Hakone Shrine, the Peace Torii gate, and the leisure spots around Hakone-en. Additionally, special events like the 'Kuzuryu Shrine Pilgrimage Boat' are held on the 13th of every month, offering unique seasonal experiences.

For instance, the 'Daichakai' includes the 'Kinpu-an' tea room with tatami seating and the 'Ryokufu-an' tea room, where you can view the scenery through circular windows.
