Asobyama Park is a lush natural sanctuary located in the heart of Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, centered around a hill with an altitude of approximately 116 meters. Situated in the center of the Fukui Plain, it has long been a beloved recreational space for local citizens. The park is officially recognized as one of the "Top 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan," making it a premier destination for viewing stunning cherry blossoms in spring and the beautiful hydrangeas (the official flower of Fukui City) in early summer. The park is packed with diverse facilities, including a mini zoo, museums, art galleries, and Shinto shrines, offering a perfect setting for nature walks, cultural learning, and family leisure.
The history of Mt. Aso extends deep into the past; during the Edo period, the area was known as Kida-yama or Atago-yama. Records from the early 18th century show that many visitors already came here for sightseeing. A notable historical anecdote involves the year 1583, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces reportedly set up camp near the Tenma-no-ike pond while attacking Kitanosho Castle. Furthermore, the area was once a quarry for "Shakudani-ishi," a highly workable stone used for ancient burial structures and various architectural-constructions. This makes Asobyama not just a park, but a site of significant regional history.
