Asahiyama Forest Park is a scenic forest park located around the summit of Mount Asahi (elevation 238.2m) in the eastern part of Takase Town, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. The name 'Asahi' (Morning Sun) comes from the fact that this area is one of the first places in the region to receive the morning sunlight. Developed in 1988 through the cooperation of local residents, the park features a unique landscape where nature and history coexist, including a striking building modeled after a traditional Japanese castle keep. The park is characterized by its beautiful seasonal scenery, with various flowers blooming throughout the year.
The park was developed in 1988 by the community of Takase Town, built through the voluntary labor of local residents and the donation of trees from various regions. Today, it is a precious site for coexistence with nature, hosting over 20,000 trees of 47 different species. At the summit, the 'Ise Asahi Motomiya' shrine adds a layer of spiritual and historical depth, symbolizing the harmony of Shinto and Buddhist traditions. The 'Aguchi Castle' structure, which mimics a castle keep, serves as a cultural landmark that conveys the local history and heritage to visitors.

The greatest attraction is the observatory at the summit, designed like a traditional castle keep known as 'Aguchi Castle.' The structure consists of three levels: the first floor houses a local history museum, the second floor features topographical models and floral dolls, and the third floor serves as the observation deck. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the cityscape of Mitoyo, the mountains of Sanuki, and the distant Seto Inland Sea. The park is also a renowned cherry blossom destination; in spring, approximately 2,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom, painting the landscape in vibrant colors.
The changing scenery of the seasons is a major draw. The best season is spring (late March to early April) when the 2,000 cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Because it is a place where the sun rises first, it is also a highly popular spot for viewing the 'Hatsuhinode' (the first sunrise of the year). In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy seasonal wildflowers, autumn foliage, and lush greenery. During the day, the contrast between the blue sky and the Set truly shines, while the evening offers a dramatic and beautiful sunset view.
The park is ideal for nature walks and family recreation. There are playground facilities for children, allowing families to enjoy the outdoors together. Additionally, an adjacent campsite offers a perfect environment to relax amidst the sounds of the forest and the wind, providing a peaceful escape from daily life. Whether you are hiking or camping, the natural surroundings offer a tranquil experience.
The area surrounding the park features beautiful coastlines. For instance, 'Chichibugahama Beach,' famous for its photogenic and Instagrammable scenery, is easily accessible by car. Another notable landmark in Mitoyo is the 'Sky Torii' of Takaya Shrine. Visiting both Asahiyama Forest Park and these nearby spots will allow you to fully experience the breathtaking natural landscapes unique to Kaga-wa Prefecture.
As the park is located in a mountainous natural area, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please stay on the maintained paths when using the observatory or walking trails. If you plan to use the campsite, please check the details in advance. Regarding payments and reservations, policies vary by facility, so it is recommended to prepare cash or check in advance. To protect the natural environment, please ensure you take all your trash home with you and follow all park etiquette.
