Asahiyama Park is a beautiful park where history and nature harmonize, located in Saiwaicho, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture. Originally a hilly area known as 'Dofune-yama,' the park has a deep historical background, having been developed to commemorate the victory in the Russo-Japanese War and the visit of the Crown Prince to the Hokuriku region. The park is home to approximately 270 Yoshino cherry trees and is officially selected as one of the '70 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Toyama.' In spring, the sight of cherry blossoms covering the slopes is truly magnificent. Additionally, the recently developed 'Viewpoint Hill,' along with large playground equipment and spacious lawn areas, makes it an ideal environment for families and tourists to connect with nature.
The history of this park dates back to the Meiji era. In 1907, trees such as pine, cherry, and maple were planted to commemorate the victory in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1909, it opened as a prefectural park to celebrate the visit of the future Emperor Taisho to the Hokuriku region. At the summit stands a bronze statue of Emperor Jimmu, erected in 1908, which features calligraphy by Nogi Maresuke, a former head of Gakushuin. Because of this, the park is sometimes referred to as 'Eiho Park.' Throughout the Showa era, the park also served as a cultural symbol for the region, hosting permanent sumo rings and housing the 'Buri Kozo' fountain, which was originally located at Himi Station.
The park offers diverse attractions for all visitors. The most notable feature is the cherry blossom scenery in spring, where 270 Yoshino cherry trees paint the slopes of Asahiyama in pink. Near the summit, the statue of Emperor Jimmu provides a sense of historical weight. The 'Viewpoint Hill,' opened in 2021, is a new favorite spot offering expansive views. For families, the playground area is a major draw, featuring a 23-meter long roller slide, a symbol tower over 6 meters high, and over 30 types of play equipment. The park also includes a vast 10,000 m² lawn area and a convenient center house for breaks.
Asahiyama Park reveals different faces depending on the season. Spring (March to April) is the most highly recommended time, as the Yoshino cherry blossoms reach full bloom, making the entire park look like it is covered in pink clouds. In autumn (October to November), the changing colors of the leaves create a vibrant natural landscape. While the park is open 24 hours, visiting during daylight hours is best for families and strolls, and visiting during the evening allows you to enjoy the beautiful sunset views from the hill.
Visitors can enjoy various activities surrounded by nature. Children can burn off energy on the large playground equipment, including the roller slide and symbol tower. The vast lawn area is perfect for picnics and relaxation. For those interested in history, walking tours to see the Emperor Jimmu statue and other historical markers are highly rewarding. The hilltop also offers a peaceful space to enjoy the breeze while looking out over the surrounding scenery.
The area surrounding the park is rich with Himi's local culture. Nearby, you can find facilities related to historical architecture (such as the currently operating 'Auberge de Mikuni'). Being close to the Himi coastline, it is easy to plan a sightseeing route that combines a nature experience at the park with enjoying fresh local seafood in the nearby areas.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, especially when navigating the Viewpoint Hill, playground, and lawn areas. Please dress according to the season and be prepared for weather changes. While photography is generally free, please be considerate of other visitors. Regarding payments, please check with specific facilities or nearby shops as they may require cash or credit cards. While the park is open 24 hours, please be mindful of noise levels and local etiquette during nighttime visits.
