Asahigaoka Park is a historic park located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. This site was once the location of Kashima Castle, and today, the remnants of its history—such as the stone walls, the Red Gate (Akamon), and the Shoin Shrine—are carefully preserved. The path leading into the park is lined with cherry trees, creating a spectacular "tunnel of flowers" during the spring season. The park is characterized by the seamless harmony between natural beauty and historical architecture.
The history of this park dates back to the era of Kashima Castle. Although much of the castle was lost during the Saga Rebellion in 1874, the significant historical remains are still cherished today. The "Red Gate" (Akamon) within the park served as the main entrance to the castle and is designated as a Prefectural Important Cultural Property. Additionally, the Shoin Shrine located on the grounds enshrines the successive lords of the Kashima clan, from the first lord, Nabeshima Tadayoshi, to the 13th lord, Naoaki. This deep historical background makes the park much more than just a green space; it is a vital site for understanding the region's heritage.
The most captivating feature is the cherry blossom scenery in spring. When in full bloom, the rows of cherry trees form a breathtaking "tunnel of flowers." Beyond the blossoms, the Red Gate and the weathered stone walls offer a profound sense of history. The architecture of the Shoin Shrine also provides a significant cultural point of interest. The way these historical structures interact with the changing seasonal landscapes creates a truly unique atmosphere.
The best time to visit is during the spring, specifically from March to April. During this period, the park is bathed in vibrant colors as the cherry blossoms reach full bloom. A particularly magical experience is the night-time illumination often held during this season. The sight of the illuminated cherry blossoms against the backdrop of the historic gate and stone walls offers a completely different, more mystical atmosphere compared to daytime visits. The scenery changes significantly depending on the season and the time of day.
At Asahigaoka Park, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing historical structures and natural beauty. In spring, walking under the cherry blossom tunnel or viewing the illuminated night scenery is highly recommended. The surrounding area also features the Samurai Residence Street (Buke Yashiki-dori), allowing you to combine your visit to the park with a walk through a traditional historical neighborhood.
The area around the park is dotted with spots that retain a historical atmosphere. The "Samurai Residence Street" is within easy walking distance, offering a glimpse into the old town's layout. Other nearby attractions include the Dyeing and Weaving Museum (Nogomi Doll Workshop) about a 16-minute walk away, and the historic Tanno-in Temple or the Hizen Yutoku Onsen Hot Spring facilities, located approximately 17 minutes away. These sites make for an excellent day trip combining history, culture, and relaxation.
Since the park is a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season. Regarding payments, there is no fee for entering the park or parking; however, please carry cash or a credit card if you plan to use nearby facilities or shops. While English signage within the park may be limited, many nearby tourist facilities offer more support. No advanced reservations are required. Photography of the scenery is generally permitted, but please respect the rules and etiquette when visiting the shrine area. As there are stone walls and some uneven paths, please be mindful of your footing for accessibility.
