The Asahidake Ropeway connects the base of Mt. Asahide (2,291m), located within Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, to the high-altitude Sugatami area. The one-way trip from the base station to the Sugatami station takes approximately 10 minutes, making it an efficient way to reach high-altitude landscapes quickly. As you ascend, you can witness the dramatic changes in vegetation and gaze down upon a dynamic volcanic landscape.
The Daisetsuzan mountain range contains the highest peaks in Hokkaido and has been a site of nature worship since ancient times. Mt. Asahidake stands as a central figure in this spiritual landscape, characterized by its unique topography formed by volcanic activity. The development of this ropeway has made the breathtaking alpine environment accessible to many, regardless of whether they are experienced mountaineers or casual sightseers.
The primary highlight is the scenery surrounding the Sugatami Station. Depending on the season, visitors can observe diverse alpine flora, unique volcanic landforms, and the rugged rock faces and volcanic smoke near the summit. The landscape changes dramatically: lush greenery and wildflowers in summer, vibrant autumn colors in fall, and a serene, white snowscape in winter. The transition of the scenery during the short ride between the base and the summit is truly spectacular.
The ropeway operating schedule varies by season. During the summer (June to October), service runs every 15 minutes, making it ideal for hiking and trekking. In the winter/off-season (late October to May), the interval increases to 20 minutes. Seasonal highlights include:
Operating hours fluctuate based on the season and weather. The first lift departs between 6:00–9:00 AM and the last lift is between 3:40–6:00 PM. Please check the official website for the exact schedule before your visit.
The ropeway makes it easy to reach high-altitude areas without a strenuous climb. Around Sugatami Station, you can enjoy walking trails through alpine plants with a backdrop of volcanic scenery. It also serves as a vital starting point for serious mountaineering routes, acting as both a transport method for sightseeing and a gateway for advanced hikers.
The area around Mt. Asahidake is dotted with hot spring (onsen) facilities and other tourist spots. Shirogane Onsen is about a 1-hour 10-minute drive away. If you are traveling toward Asahikawa, the area is also within reach of Asahikawa Airport, Asahi Zoo, and the beautiful Biei landscapes, allowing you to combine mountain exploration with regional sightseeing.
