Arimura Lava Lookout is a scenic observation point located in the Taisho Lava Field at the foot of Sakurajima's Minamidake. The landscape, characterized by vast stretches of black lava and resilient black pine trees, offers a unique view shaped by volcanic activity. From here, you can observe the beautiful, conical shape of Minamidake, which differs from the more familiar wide profile of Sakurajima. It is an exceptional spot for viewing the panoramic scenery across Kinko Bay, including the distant Mt. Kailand (Mt. Kaimon).

History & Cultural Background

This area is part of the Taisho Lava Field, formed by the eruptions of Sakurajima. In 1990, the area was developed with a lava walking trail and tunnels used as evacuation shelters. Additionally, in 2005, an observation shaft was constructed on the slopes of Minamidake to monitor ground movement and volcanic activity, making this a vital site for volcanic observation. The region has a deep history of coexistence with the powerful forces of nature and the constant influence of volcanic eruptions.

The centerpiece is the approximately 1km long walking trail. Along the path, you will find various poetic monuments and stone tablets dedicated to notable figures associated with Sakuraja, such as Soshi Takano, Kuninori Hirano, and Shigorō Kaion, adding a literary charm to your walk. Another highlight is the "Lion Rock," a uniquely shaped rock formation that resembles a lion, inviting visitors to explore the natural sculptures created by the lava. Depending on the weather and volcanic activity, you may even hear the rumbling or explosive sounds from the Minamidake crater.

The lookout is open 24 hours a day, allowing for different experiences depending on the time. During the day, the bright light beautifully highlights the textures of the black lava, the green of the pine trees, and the blue of the sea. On clear days, the visibility is excellent, allowing for a crystal-clear view of Mt. Kaimon in the distance. While accessible year-round, visiting on a sunny day is highly recommended for the best photographic opportunities.
