Aratorigawa Park is a comprehensive park located in Minato Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, stretching approximately 1 km along both sides of the Aratorigawa River. Established in 1985, it functions as an urban greening botanical garden. The park features a diverse range of areas, including a lavender garden, a traditional Japanese garden, a Sunken Garden, multi-purpose plazas, and the unique 'Phoenix Island' artificial island. It also serves a cultural role through the 'Aratorigawa Park Garden Plaza,' where plant exhibitions and educational workshops are held to promote urban greening.
The park was designated as a special park in 1979 as part of an urban planning project. The goal was to utilize the Aratorigawa river canal while creating a buffer against urban pollution and providing a recreational space for citizens. Since its opening on April 1, 1985, the park has undergone continuous development. In 1987, the Phoenix Island and its fountain were completed at the southern end, and in 1991, the 'Aratorigawa Park Bridge' was built to connect both sides of the river. The opening of the Garden Plaza in 1993 further solidified the park's role as a center for botanical education and community engagement.
Visitors can enjoy various landscapes and plant life throughout the park. The lavender garden is a standout feature, hosting 3,000 plants across 18 different species, making it one of the largest in Aichi Prefecture. During the spring, the banks of the river are lined with approximately 1,000 cherry trees, attracting many visitors. Other notable areas include the Japanese garden and the Sunken Garden, as well as Phoenix Island, which offers a tropical atmosphere with its Phoenix palms, Washingtonia palms, and cycads. The Garden Plaza is also an essential facility for those interested in botanical exhibitions and learning.
The park offers different scenery depending on the season. In spring, the 1,000 cherry trees create a breathtaking canopy. The lavender season brings vibrant colors and scents to the large lavender garden. In winter, you can observe plants like Sasanqua camellias in the Sunken Garden, while the Japanese garden offers beautiful views of red and white plum blossoms. For those wishing to visit the Garden Plaza, please note it is open from 9:00 to 16:30, where you can also enjoy the cafe area.
Aratorigawa Park is a versatile space for recreation, learning, and relaxation. Visitors can engage in sports at the plazas or tennis courts, enjoy day camping (free of charge), or try fishing at Phoenix Island. The Garden Plaza provides opportunities to deepen your understanding of plants through exhibitions and workshops. You can also take a break at the 'Shion' cafe located within the Garden Plaza.
The park is highly accessible via Aratorigawa Park Station on the Aonami Line of the Nagoya Rinkai Rapid Transit. The area serves as a vital recreational hub for local residents and visitors alike, with the Phoenix Bridge providing a scenic connection between the two sides of the park.
For a comfortable stroll, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please check the operating hours for specific facilities like the Garden Plaza (9:00–16:30). The Garden Plaza is closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday), the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and during the New Year holidays. While many areas are free, please carry cash if you plan to use the services at the Garden Plaza. Regarding English support, please check local signage or staff availability on-site.
