Arahei Tenjin (commonly known as Sugawara Shrine) is a shrine located in Tenjin-cho, Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its location atop a rocky mountain that juts out into the sea. During high tide, the shrine takes on a mystical appearance, looking as if it is floating on the ocean; because of this, the rocky formation is often called 'Tenjin Island.' As one of the 'Eight Scenic Views of Kanoya,' it offers a unique and breathtaking landscape where architecture and nature blend seamlessly.
The official name of the shrine is Sugawara Shrine, and it enshrines the deity Sugawara no Michizane. While the exact date of its founding is unknown, local tradition suggests it may date back to the Tenbun era (1532–1555). The shrine has long been a place of worship for local residents, with a tradition of many visitors arriving on the 25th of every month for local festivities. Due to its location jutting into the sea, it serves as a sacred site deeply connected to the natural elements.
The greatest attraction is undoubtedly the view of 'Tenjin Island' floating on the sea. The landscape changes its expression depending on the tide, constantly captivating visitors. The contrast between the solemn atmosphere of the shrine, which honors Sugawara no Michizane, and the surrounding lush nature is a sight to behold. On clear days, the blue sea and sky harmonize with the shrine's structure, creating an exceptional spot for photography.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, we highly recommend checking the tide levels before your visit. During high tide, you can witness the most mystical sight of the shrine appearing to float on the water. Visiting during daylight hours is also ideal, as the vibrant colors of the sea and the shrine architecture are most striking under the sun. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sky and the ocean is particularly magnificent.

The shrine is located along Prefectural Route 68 in a naturally rich area. If traveling by car from the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal (Sakurajima Port), it is approximately a 1-hour drive via National Routes 224 and 220. It is a wonderful addition to any itinerary that includes exploring the natural beauty of Kanoya via a scenic coastal drive.
Please observe proper shrine etiquette during your visit. The shrine is open 24 hours a day, but as it is a sacred site, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain near the rocky mountain and coast can be uneven. Please ensure you have cash on hand for offerings (saisen) or purchasing amulets. As English signage and staff support may be limited, it is helpful to learn basic Japanese prayer etiquette beforehand.
